How to Reach the Non-Dual State: A Guide to Spiritual Awakening

The non-dual state is the ultimate realization that all is one — that the separation we perceive between self and other, mind and world, is an illusion. This state of consciousness, often called non-duality, oneness, or Self-realization, is not a distant dream; it's the natural essence of who you already are.

In this blog post, we’ll explore how to reach the non-dual state, dissolve the ego, and awaken to the timeless truth of your being.

What Is the Non-Dual State?

Non-duality means “not two.” It points to the direct experience that there is no true division between subject and object, seer and seen, self and other. It is pure awareness — a spacious, silent presence beyond the mind.

In traditions like Advaita Vedanta, Zen Buddhism, and Taoism, this state is described as the realization of the Self, the Tao, or simply, what is.

When you reach the non-dual state, you no longer identify with thoughts, emotions, or roles. You awaken as pure consciousness, beyond the illusion of separateness.

How to Reach the Non-Dual State

1. Practice Self-Inquiry (Who Am I?)

This is the most direct path taught by sages like Ramana Maharshi. Instead of chasing thoughts, turn your attention inward and ask:

“Who is thinking this thought?”
“Who am I, really?”

Allow the question to dissolve the identity that arises. Eventually, the false sense of a separate self begins to fade, revealing the stillness that was always there.

2. Become Aware of Awareness

Try this now: shift your attention from thoughts and sensations to the awareness that perceives them.

Notice: you are not the thoughts — you are the one aware of the thoughts.
This witnessing presence is your true nature. Sit with it. Rest in it. Let it become familiar.

3. Let Go of Seeking

Paradoxically, the more you seek the non-dual state, the more distant it seems. Why? Because seeking implies you are not already That.

Drop all effort. Rest as you are. Trust that awareness doesn't need to do anything to be itself.

4. Meditate Daily in Silence

Stillness is the doorway to non-duality. In silent meditation, allow thoughts to come and go without attachment. With time, you’ll notice the space between thoughts — the infinite silence that is your true Self.

Recommended practice: 20–30 minutes of silent sitting each day. Just be.

5. Read Non-Dual Teachings

Immersing yourself in non-dual wisdom can accelerate your awakening. Read the works of:

  •     Nisargadatta Maharaj (I Am That)
  •     Ramana Maharshi
  •     Rupert Spira
  •     Mooji
  •     Adyashanti

Let their words point you back to what you already are.

Signs You Are Approaching the Non-Dual State

  •     A deep sense of inner peace and silence
  •     Loss of identification with ego or personal story
  •     A feeling of oneness with all that is
  •     No resistance to the present moment
  •     An effortless clarity, beyond mind

These are not goals to cling to, but natural signs of awakening.

Final Thoughts: You Are Already That

The great secret of non-duality is this:
You don’t need to reach the non-dual state — you are it.

The only barrier is the illusion of separation, created by the mind. As that illusion dissolves through inquiry, stillness, and grace, what remains is pure being — timeless, boundless, and free.

Return to that still presence, again and again, until the sense of a separate "me" dissolves completely. Then, all that remains is This — the eternal now, undivided and whole.
